Affecting Princeton's Style
More often than not, being a college student comes hand-in-hand with running low on funds. However, finding a job can be a tough undertaking. A rapidly increasing number of us are turning to clothing brands in a phenomenon called being a “brand ambassador.” Being a brand ambassador has recently become really popular on college campuses, because it allows students to directly affect their campus's style, while in many cases also providing payment in the form of a ton of free clothing! In addition to wearing and representing the brand, responsibilities usually include providing photos of the company’s clothing items that you’re sporting around campus. Some companies even send you promotional materials to hand out to your friends. But how do you get started with such an amazing opportunity? It’s all about keeping your eyes open.
Last year, as the leaves turned fiery colors and the air grew crisp, I realized that I was missing an essential article of clothing: a classic Chelsea boot. I looked around and saw people wearing expensive brands I could never afford, so I turned to the mighty Internet and continued my search. At long last, I remembered the name of a company a friend had mentioned to me months before: Thursday Boot Company.
Even the name screamed “fall” at me--my favorite season. The first photo that came up on their website was the exact boot I was looking for. The same friend who told me about the brand happened to be a Thursday ambassador, so, on a whim, I decided to apply. Unfortunately, by the time I found the application, it had already closed for the year. Nevertheless, I kept it on my mind for the next semester and a half before the application reopened for the fall. Now, I get to represent a brand that is, among other qualities, beautiful, durable, and ecologically-conscious. My promotional efforts are rewarded with merchandise that receives compliments left and right. I am able to see the tangible difference my efforts make when friends--and even strangers!--ask me where my boots are from, or where they can get their own pair! Directly affecting Princeton’s style has been an amazing experience so far, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store!
